Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a common ingredient in cough syrup. Used as directed, it is an effective cough suppressant and expectorant, but it has a serious potential for misuse and is a particularly prominent teen drug abuseconcern. Cough syrup addiction can have profoundly negative physical and psychological consequences, especially in developing minds.
When used inappropriately, dextromethorphan (DXM) is a psychotropic substance that can cause dependency and withdrawal symptoms. Dextromethorphan addiction has serious physical and psychological consequences. Moreover, many over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrup formulations include other active ingredients that can have profoundly negative health consequences when misused. For example, acetaminophen is a common pain reliever included in cough syrup formulations, but an overdose can cause liver failure. Another ingredient, phenylephrine, relieves sinus congestion; however, an overdose can cause hypertension and seizures. Like DXM, these compounds are safe when taken as directed. However, misuse of cough syrup (DXM abuse) can lead to an inadvertent overdose of non-psychotropic compounds, the results of which can be hazardous or lethal.
The incidence of teens drinking cough syrup is on the rise. A 2018 survey on drug use among adolescents showed that more than 1 in 30 teenagers has misused DXM. In an attempt to curb teen DXM use, 19 states implemented restrictions on the minimum age to buy cough syrup (which is generally 18 years old).

Codeine-only products can be obtained with a prescription as a time release tablet. Codeine is also marketed in cough syrups with zero to a half-dozen other active ingredients, and a linctus (e.g., Paveral) for all of the uses for which codeine is indicated.
Codeine preparations require a prescription in India. A preparation of paracetamol and codeine is available in India. Codeine is also present in various cough syrups as codeine phosphate including chlorpheniramine maleate. Pure codeine is also available as codeine sulphate tablets. Codeine containing cough medicine has been banned in India with effect from 14 March 2016. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has found no proof of its efficacy against cough control.[86]
Codeine preparations are available as over the counter pharmacy medicines in Sri Lanka. The most common preparation is Panadeine, which contains 500 mg of Paracetamol and 8 mg of Codeine. But cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine is banned, even with a prescription.
For example, in 2016, when popular cough syrup Corex was banned, Pfizer Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of US-based drug maker Pfizer Inc., was quick to discontinue the cough syrup Corex in its then form, changed the composition but decided to retain the brand name for its future respiratory products. The company decided to stop making the Corex cough syrup formulation, a combination of codeine phosphate 10 mg and chlorpheniramine maleate 4mg, changed the formulation and extended the same brand name. The new formulation is now called Corex T (Codeine + Triprolidine) . 59ce067264
