The movie is also filled with an ongoing philosophical discussion about the place ofthe Bushmen in the universe. The scene in which the pilot throws his bottle istranscribed from life; the bit in which the Bushman throws the bottle is,incredibly, a fantasy. We are given a tour of the underworld to see howevil and strong a force the bottle really is. In the end, though, the Bushmanis unable to return the bottle to its original source. He must abandon it, andthat's the end of the gods.
The movie has a number of flaws. One is that it is a little too long,and another is that the director is a little too fond of the goofy, funny, outof place, bizarre. But the movie does have a great heart. It is the story ofa people who have been turned into gods by the same things that have madethe Western world what it is today: the same blood, the same religion, thesameness of things. And, in a sense, the same things that have brought twokings to an end.
What is most remarkable about this movie is the way it documents thehumble beginnings of a simple but beautiful idea: The distance between theand its consequences. The movie begins with a plane being tossed, then the Bushmanand his discovery of an object that he can use, and then the fight over thebottle, which grows out of the first two scenes. It ends with a flight, thebottle in the plane, and a black-eyed UN official, unaware that the Bushmen whowe it to be, calling the Bushmen evil. The two scenes work together; theflight is the end of the gods, and the Bushman is the one who has become agod.
The last scene, in the office of the African Airline, isfilled with people making preposterous claims about the bottle. Many ofthese people are clearly outsiders who think that they have an insight intothe meaning of the thing, because they believe it must have magical powers.But the bottle does not have any magical powers, and it is only theunexpectedness of the thing that makes it interesting.
Ok, I have seen this movie before but I will see it again. It was funny and the acting was great (especially N!xau's) and the story is hilarious. This is an old movie from the '80's but it is a very funny comedy I highly reccomend it. Oh, and I am not a white Western man, I am South African. So, if you want a good movie for youself or your kids, you should see this one. My wife actually liked it!
