Dhingra is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Florida and has served as the Acting Horticulture Department Head for the past two years. He received his Bachelors and PhD in Horticulture from the University of Florida in 2010. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Florida, he completed his Masters in Plant Biology from the University of Florida in 2006.
The Horticulture Department, the largest of its kind in the country, was founded in 1892. The department's research program is dedicated to meeting the needs of Texas growers in plant production and its services span from propagation to crop protection. Among the services provided by the department are the following:
Marketing Development: the department provides marketing research, development, and implementation and implementation of marketing programs within the university and with the Texas agri-business community.
Research and Extension: the department develops, coordinates, and implements research programs that address issues of importance to Texas growers.
Education: the department provides instruction and training in basic to advanced horticultural science to undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students.
“I’m honored to be named department head,” Dhingra said. “When I was a graduate student at Texas A&M, I had the good fortune of being part of the division’s team that brought the first new plant breeding line to the United States in nearly 40 years. That’s a pretty remarkable accomplishment, and it provides a great foundation for me to carry on the tradition of excellence in the department.”
“I am excited to be joining the TAMU Horticultural Sciences department and look forward to working with Dr. Jeffress and the faculty and staff here,” said Dhingra. “This is a great opportunity to pursue my research interests and, in addition, to develop new research collaborations and new courses and curricula.”
“Dr. Dhingra will lead the horticulture department with a strategic plan to drive campus growth in greenhouse vegetable production and to strengthen its role in the university’s coastal vegetable programs,” said Dr. Rich Jeffress, the newly appointed provost of A&M. “This is an exciting time for the department and I am confident in Dr. Dhingra’s vision for the future.”
