Many of the flagship emulations we’ve seen under the Waves name over the last few years have lacked individual and collective user customization. Every mix once fairly unique now shares the same settings as any other, and if you didn’t like the sound, you’re not given the option to change it. Wave has addressed that, but with a flywheel that can’t stop spinning. This update, Saturn 2, saw a range of individual and collective adjustments that may compare to a performance upgrade.

The interface has changed drastically in both look and feel, and is now a streamlined affair covering the simple pre/bus functions, drums/vocals/effects controls, and of course, the very convinient KNOB output. Although the interface itself is streamlined, the functions themselves are as laudable as ever. They now finally offer complete customization with an exponential amount of further available options in the form of Step Sequencers and Curves, and the ability to morph the KNOB output into very complex sounds like a tube chorus and flanger. The added flexibility worked its way into the hidden aspects, in the form of the unique new Processing Style menu, allowing you to tweak the waveform, filtering, compression, etc. in an entirely new way.

To sum it all up in one sentence, this is a whole new paradigm in audio processing that goes above and beyond the previous, but without sacrificing the traditionals. If we had to venture a guess, it’s safe to say that the audio industry is poised to forever be affected by the boundaries Wave has created here.

This is a powerful tool that allows you to create anything from catchy basslines to aggressive synth riffs or transparent atmospheres or romantic melodies. And when it works as well as it does here, it’s a miracle.
