It was a Friday night in 1955, and all was going well in the Top Room at the Royal Oak, as the Ramblers were playing. Despite an influx of unwanted customers, the crowd remained rather subdued as they waited for the ramblers and the Shakespears (sic) to start at 9 pm.
The set list began with the latest craze coming out of the States, “So Much To Say” from the album The Girl Can’t Dance. The girls were dancing in happy delight as they held hands and swayed their hips from side to side, but when the music stopped the mood changed into rebellion. Suddenly the girls began to scream, the trumpeter and lead singer of the Ramblers, as the girls in the audience began to mime to the imaginary guy they imagined was on the stage who told them in song that he would “sort out” the girls for being bad.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the Ramblers singing, “It’s A Quiet Night” by The Shakespears (sic) (sic) from their Am-A-Nam-A album. They all seemed to be singing along with the lead singer but there were no instruments. How could they sing without instruments? d2c66b5586
